When a hobby gets more serious there is a temptation to think it can make money. There are certainly plenty of examples of people who have become so good at their past time that they can compete in commercial world. There are individuals who have made model aircraft as a hobby, and gone on to get into the niche market of model aircraft flying. These are not small aircraft but are the big remote control jobs seen at fairs and special events. In a slightly different sphere of work, there are umpteen potters, crafts people and artists who have taken the next step up and opened up a gallery to sell their work.
It is a very satisfying move, and one which lots of enthusiasts never make because they do not feel their work is up to a good enough standard. That should really be judged objectively, and maybe a financial consultant is the sort of person to offer an opinion. If the idea is to open a gallery then there may well be the need to put together a business plan and find out if the proposal is viable in financial terms. It is true that some enthusiasts are not too concerned about viability and the whole venture could be regarded as a vanity project. That is fine if there is another source of income, but not so if the hobby is going to taken into the commercial world with a view to making it a going concern.
Reputation counts for a lot and that can come with exposure in newspapers, and articles in magazines. The internet is useful, but that will not bring in local customers who may be interested in buying something unique. It is the ‘one off’ aspect which many are keen to find, so for the hobby to move to professional sales is something to be welcomed by many consumers.
The product which has its own individual mark will do well as people are always on the look out for the item which stands out. The model aircraft is an item which simply has to prove it is good, well made and flies. But even then, the engineering of the small hobby venture will be to a higher standard than anything made on a production, so there is room to emphasis this point to potential customers. Getting the finance to support such ventures is important, whether they are for the home or the business
